As a result, clinical trials in these regions are often faster, giving patients earlier access to innovation. Without reform, Europe risks falling behind.

On the drug side, the Clinical Trials Regulation (EU 536/2014) aims to harmonize and streamline trials, introducing the CTIS (Clinical Trial Information System) portal to reduce administrative delays. For medical devices, however, the MDR 2017/745 has tightened requirements on safety, traceability, and transparency—sometimes multiplying timelines fivefold.
Better coordination between these frameworks could ease innovation. Beyond regulatory simplification, it is a question of international competitiveness: without convergence, the U.S. and Asia will remain more attractive for strategic trials and investment.
